I am an avid John Deere customer, and typically only buy John Deere products. Worthington
Ag Parts discussed the Capello chopping corn head for over a year pressuring me
to consider one. After some research and talking with other Capello customers, I
decided to try one.
My experience was very positive. The Capello head matched up with my Deere combine
very well, with minimal adjustments. The chopping action on the head did an excellent
job on the tough triple stack corn stalks. I was able to eliminate our normal disking
operation prior to running a ripper, saving the labor, fuel, and wear on my disk.
That cost savings was almost enough to pay for this head in the first year of operation.
The picture is from a field where we used the Deere 893 head with knife rolls on
the left side and the Capello on the right side and headland for comparison. Where
we ran the Deere head, you can see the excess residue that will be a challenge for
the next crop.
Mike & Steve Bousema, Worthington, MN
Mike & Steve of Bousema Farms in Worthington, MN purchased the flagship Capello
Chopping corn head in 2010: the 12 row, 30 inch, chopping and folding head. Bousema’s
matched the head up to their John Deere 9770 combine and paired the available HeadSight®
automatic header height controller with their Contour Master® system for optimal
residue management and ease of use. The Bousema’s were so excited and impressed
with the way the head handled their 2000 acres of corn, they became an authorized
dealer of Capello corn heads in the Worthington area. Take a look at the responses
the Bousema’s provided to some of the questions posed by Worthington Ag Parts following
the 2010 harvest:
How did you hear about Capello heads? We have a long relationship with Worthington
Ag Parts, we know we can trust them.
Are you replacing an existing head? Yes, we had a 2009 John Deere 612, 12
row 30 inch with knife rolls.
How would you compare your Capello head to your former head? The Capello
is foldable, so it’s a lot easier to use and safer to transport…we don’t have to
drop the head off on a trailer anymore. The Capello did a better job on the stalks
traveling at the same or higher speeds. There are very simple maintenance demands
and the rolled edge on the Capello deck plates resulted in significantly less head
loss. After harvesting with our Capello, the fields just look better than any other
head we’ve seen and better than any stalk chopper could do.
Would you recommend a Capello Corn Head to other farmers and neighbors, and if so,
why? Absolutely, Capello has solved the problems other chopping heads encounter:
windrowing, slip clutch issues, gear box trouble and speed limitations…just to name
a few.
What is the key issue that your Capello head resolved for you? The design
of the Capello does an outstanding job is sizing residue for next year’s crop, whether
it will be soybeans or corn-on-corn. It does it without large power requirements, and
that saves costly extra tillage next spring.
Can you estimate the cost savings you realized this year by switching to a Capello?
Tractor/fuel/chopper/labor….$7/acre
Head and kernel loss in the field….$5/acre
Not fighting the trash with the ripper and field cultivator….PRICELESS!
